The Mighty Mahseer
Home to the mighty Mahseer
Much has been written about this elusive fish. Ever since the ninteenth century when India was ruled by the colonial english and
military officers sought similar fishing challenges to those at home up to the present day when package tours from Europe make the search for this legendary fish somewhat easier.
Much has been written but nothing really prepares you for the challenge ahead. Following a lengthy flight from Heathrow to Bangalore via Mumbai the mayhem that greets you is pure India, an overnight stop to gather ones senses and the journey to the Cauvery river begins.
There are many places in India that are home to the Mahseer but none so steeped in history and home to a potential monster as the Cauvery.
A journey of some 3 hours during which you are likely to experience the sights and sounds that make up unforgettable India.
We arranged to fish for 7 days and after arriving at the camp we settled in to our accomodation, a cross between a chalet and a tent.
We fished a variety of locations on the Cauvery, The Rapids, Crocodile Pool, Camp Pool to name a few, always Landrover there, Coracle back, which was always an event by itself.
All in all we caught Mahseer to 70lbs but on the last night at camp pool we hooked and lost one of those legendary monsters.
I would recommend this trip to anyone and maybe I will return one day.
