ANGLING TRUST HELP IRAQI WAR SURVIVOR GET BACK INTO FISHINGSubscribe to our RSS news feed

To those who remember the Gulf War of the early 1990s, Amar Kanim was the boy who made a miraculous recovery after the conflict that nearly took his life. Thanks to a successful media campaign by MP Emma Nicholson, he was able to settle in England and receive specialist surgery to give him a brand new start.

Behind the headlines of war and survival, however, the young Amar grew up in the Devon countryside, where he discovered a love of the outdoors and fishing, in particular, catching both sea and freshwater fish. With Amar back in the media recently after his remarkable reunion with lost family, however, more of his life story emerged, including recent hardships and the fact that Amar had been forced to sell his fishing tackle to maintain his flat.

Keen to show compassion, following the recent BBC Panorama documentary “The Iraqi Orphan: 30 Lost Years”, the Angling Trust and Fishing Megastore made contact and pledged to help get him fishing again. Fishing Megastore provided a complete fishing kit to restart his favourite hobby, while the Angling Trust sent angling writer and Coach Dominic Garnett to deliver the gear, also providing a new Environment Agency rod licence, fishing ticket and a full day’s tuition.

With Amar keen to join his Devon friends on carp fishing trips, a set up for this style of fishing was provided, along with some coarse float fishing gear. Dominic took him to nearby Anglers Eldorado Lakes to try out the new kit, which was christened with five carp to double figures.

“I’m so very happy with the new gear, this will keep me going for years!” said a delighted Amar. “I’m really grateful to Fishing Megastore and the Angling Trust. I missed my fishing a lot. It’s so peaceful. It gets me outdoors, out of my flat and stops me from worrying about things.”

“I’m so pleased to help Amar get back into fishing,” said Dominic Garnett. “We had a brilliant day out and gave the new gear a thorough trial. He really made up for lost time, too, with some excellent fish on both float fishing and carp tactics. You can tell how much he enjoys fishing- and the smile on his face was priceless. I’m proud to represent the Angling Trust with such a lovely gesture of support. I must say we were also blown away by the kindness of Fishing Megastore, who not only donated the gear but went the extra mile to put together a really well thought out selection of tackle that was perfect for Amar’s needs.”
